The Journal of Wound Care has published a supplement on the clinical use of small intestinal submucosa (SIS).1

Ten different cases were presented by the treating clinicians.

The supplement has a forward by Dr. Jeffrey Niezgoda, president of the American Professional Wound Care Society.

The review detailed the advantages, applications, and evidence for use of SIS.

The presented cases were as follows:

  • An infected postoperative wound on a wrist
  • Hidradenitis suppurativa in the axillary region
  • A scald burn to the torso and shoulder
  • A partial-thickness donor-site wound
  • A toe stump wound with arterial disease
  • Skin excisions in radiation dermatitis
  • A post-Mohs defect on a hand
  • A hand injury with exposed tendon
  • A hard-to-heal leg ulcer
  • A post-Mohs defect to a hand with thin skin and exposed tendons

The assortment of wounds was presented by a variety of clinical specialists, and all cases included images that followed the progression the wounds. Dr. Niezgoda stated that the case studies demonstrate how SIS has improved the care of a wide range of wound types.
